How to Travel to Russia from the US in 2026: Trip Guide

US citizens can travel to Russia in 2026 with a tourist visa and a travel invitation. As an American, you can get a multiple-entry tourist visa valid for 3 years, and the whole process is more manageable than you think.

My experience helping people travel to Russia

Since 2025, I have been helping international travellers go to Russia. I organise group trips and support people who prefer to go on their own.

Americans are a big part of my groups, and they are usually the most concerned travellers, because there is so little clear information and so much confusion. Everyone I have helped so far got their visa and went to Russia as a tourist. Everything in this guide comes from what I have seen on my own trips and from the people who travelled there.

Why the Information Online Feels So Discouraging

If you search for how to travel to Russia, the first thing you find is a government advisory telling you not to go. Given the current geopolitical situation, that is expected. Still, travelling to Russia has always been possible for every nationality, US citizens included, and you do it by getting a visa and going. If safety is your main question, I cover it in this post.

What changed is the preparation. You now need to know how to travel there under current sanctions and restrictions, including some that come from the Russian side. It looks complicated from the outside, but it gets much easier once you have the right information and tools, because most problems come from confusion and not from the trip itself.

Here are the steps in the order I follow with the travellers I help.

Step 1: Plan Your Trip to Russia

Before anything else, decide how long you will stay and which cities you want to see. Moscow and St Petersburg are the usual starting points, and you can add other places too. Then find accommodation in each city.

I put this first because the invitation and the visa application both ask for your dates and where you will stay. Even with a 3-year visa, you need a clear plan for your first trip, and the travellers who plan first have the smoothest process.

Step 2: How to Get a Russian Tourist Invitation

The invitation is a travel voucher issued for the exact dates of your trip. It includes your accommodation and where you will stay, so we can only prepare it once your plan is clear.

I work with a trusted official Russian company that specialises in tourist invitations.

Step 3: Russian Visa Application for US Citizens

Once you have the invitation, collect the remaining documents and apply for your visa, following your process of your state.

Every American needs a tourist visa to enter Russia, and this is not new. The rule works both ways: Russians need a visa for the United States, and Americans need one for Russia.

What surprises most of the Americans I work with is the 3-year multiple-entry tourist visa, which allows stays of up to 180 days within 6 months. Other nationalities do not have this benefit.

Standard processing takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on your state, if everything is correct. I recommend starting at least 2 months before your trip, or even earlier, and not leaving it to the last moment. For more details, read this post below:

Step 4: How to Pay in Russia as a Tourist

Visa and Mastercard do not work in Russia. Foreign cards are not accepted and Western services are blocked, so you need a plan for payments before you fly.

Start with cash, and bring enough of it. The bills should be in near-perfect condition, with no writing, no dirt and no tears, almost like new. Check them carefully before you travel.

When you land, take a taxi from the airport to your hotel and start the next step from there.

Step 5: Russian Bank Card and SIM Card for Tourists

If you don’t want to rely only on cash, set aside a couple of hours at your hotel to get a Russian bank card and a local SIM card. Getting a connection in Russia involves several steps that need to be done in the right order.

I wrote a step-by-step guide for this. With a local bank card and SIM, you move around almost like a local. You have internet, navigation, and banking for the rest of your stay.

Even with money on the card, you'd better keep some cash with you in case something goes wrong, so I suggest you carry both.

Step 6: Best Apps for Russia

Google Maps does not work in Russia, so download these 3 apps before you travel:

In some parts of big cities, especially central places like Red Square, GPS can lag or show the wrong location. If that happens, don’t worry; it is normal. Look at the sights around you to work out where you are, and don’t rely only on the blue dot.
